Biography of H.E. Dr. ZHAO Yanbo

H.E. Dr. ZHAO Yanbo was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Botswana by Chinese President Xi Jinping and took his office on 16th Nov. 2016. Before he came to Botswana, he had been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Ambassador ZHAO is a professional diplomat. He began his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986. When he worked in the headquarter of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, China, Ambassador ZHAO served in the departments of Personnel, North America and Oceanian Affairs and External Security Affairs respective. When he worked abroad, he served in the Chinese Embassies to Egypt, Vietnam, Canada, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand (covering two countries of Cook Islands and Niue), Sierra Leone and posted by consecutive diplomatic tittles from Attache, Third Secretary, Second Secretary, First Secretary, Counsellor, Deputy Chief of the Mission and Ambassador.

Just before being appointed Ambassador, he held the post of the Vice Mayor of Yichang City in Hubei Province of China in charge of economic and financial affairs from 2011 to 2013.

Prior to his diplomatic career, Ambassador ZHAO studied in Xi'an International Studies University from 1982 to 1986, held a Bachelor of Arts degree in American and British Literature, and then studied in China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing from 1986 to 1987, held a Certificate in Laws.

In 2016, Ambassador ZHAO was conferred the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Civil Laws by the University of Sierra Leone.

In the same year, Ambassador ZHAO was awarded a medal of the Order of Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone by President Dr. Earnest Bai Koroma of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Ambassador ZHAO married to Mao Xuehong, and they have one daughter.
