2016/2017 CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China invites qualified citizens of Botswana to apply for the 2016/2017 Chinese Government Scholarship, which consists of two programs: MOE Scholarship Program and MOFCOM Scholarship Program. One applicant can only apply for one scholarship program.

 

1.      MOE Scholarship Program

 

Introduction:

In order to further strengthen the mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of China and Botswana, the Chinese Government has been providing scholarships for Botswana students to study in Chinese higher education institutions since 1980s. The Ministry of Education of China (MOE) formulates MOE Scholarship Program, and entrusts China Scholarship Council (CSC) to handle the enrollment of international students.

 

For the academic year of 2016/2017, MOE Scholarship will provide full scholarships for Botswana students who wish to study in China for bachelor, master or doctoral degrees, general scholars and senior scholars, of which applications higher than bachelor degree are preferred. MOE Scholarship will cover the fees for tuition, basic learning materials, accommodation, living allowance, outpatient medical service and comprehensive medical insurance. Please note that the international travel costs shall be borne by the Botswana students.

Undergraduate scholarship recipients must register for Chinese-taught credit courses. Graduate and non-degree scholarship students can register for either the Chinese-taught program or the English-taught program if applicable. Eligibility:

-Applicants must be Botswana citizens in good health.

-Applicants for undergraduate programs must have senior high school certificate with good academic performance and be under the age of 25.

-Applicants for master degree programs must have bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35.

-Applicants for doctoral degree programs must have master's degree and be under the age of 40.

-Applicants for General Scholar program must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study and be under the age of 45, all subjects besides Chinese language are available.

-Applicants for Senior Scholar program must have master's degree or above, or hold academic titles of associate professor or above, and be under the age of 50.

 

Application Package Documents:

Applicants must provide the following full package of application documents (marked MOE Scholarship, 2 sets of hard copies) to the Chinese Embassy in Botswana before 15 April, 2016. Application materials will not be returned regardless of the result of application.

(1). Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship. Applicants should first submit the application form on the CSC Online Application System for International Students and print it out for two hard copies.

(2). Notarized/certified photocopy of Highest diploma. If applicants are university students or already employed, they shall also provide studying certificates or employment documents.

(3). Academic transcripts. Applicants for undergraduate studies are required to provide certified copy of senior high school transcripts. Applicants for other categories of studies also need to provide relevant certified copy of academic transcripts.

(4). A study plan or research proposal in English (a minimum of 200 words for undergraduates, 500 words for non-degree students as scholars, and 800 words for postgraduates). Detailed research plan (additional paper can be attached) is required for postgraduates or scholars for advanced studies.

(5). Recommendation letters. Applicants for master or doctoral degree studies and senior scholars must submit two letters of recommendation by professors or associate professors.

(6). Applicants for music programs are requested to submit one CD recording of the applicants' own work. Applicants for fine arts programs must submit one CD recording of the applicants' own work (including two sketches, two color paintings and two other works).

(7). Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form. It can be downloaded from CSC website (http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or http://www.campuschina.org). The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form.

(8). Applicants with Admission Letter from designated universities should enclose the letter in the application package.

(9). Applicants with valid HSK Certificate should enclose it in the application package.

 

Instructions of the CSC Online Application System for MOE Scholarship:

Step 1: Visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or www.campuschina.org and click "Application Online for International Students".

Step 2: Read "Tips for online application" carefully before clicking "NEXT" to the registration page.

Step 3: After registration, log in with your user name and password. Choose Chinese Government Scholarship as your scholarship type unless you are applying for other Cooperation Program Scholarship.

Step 4: Put 0721 as your Agency Number..

Step 5: Please fill in he Online Application Form truly, correctly and completely following the steps listed on the left of the page.

Applicants are required to select a discipline before choosing their majors. For any doubt about the disciplines and majors, please refer to the Disciplines Index, which can be downloaded from "Help".

Step 6:Click Preview and check your Application Form carefully before submitting it. Click Confirmation of Submit to submit your Application Form.

Step 7: Download the completed Application Form by licking Download Application and print two hard copies.

Step 8: Prepare other supporting documents as required and send the full package of application documents (in duplicate) to the Chinese Embassy in Botswana.

Step 9: You can make changes to your application by clicking Retrieve Application on the left of the page. But make sure to submit it again by clicking Confirmation of Submit after finishing all the changes. Otherwise, the retrieved application will become invalid and your new application will not be received either.

 

Selection of Institutions and Specialties:

Applicants may choose one academic program and three institutions as personal preferences from the list of Chinese Higher Education Institutions designated by MOE. Please check the Directory of the Chinese Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese Government Scholarship Program. Applicants can find the above mentioned information from the website of CSC (http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or http://www.studyinchina.edu.cn ).

 

Applicants are required to fill in their preferences of institutions and academic programs strictly in accordance with those listed in the Directory. Only the listed Chinese Higher Education Institutions in the Directory are available to the applicants for their study in China.

 

Placement:

Qualified applications will be sent to universities for placement. Based on various factors, such as the host university's teaching capacity, study length and applicants' criteria, CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments or changes to the candidate's host university, field of study, supporting categories and duration of scholarship. Applications enclosed with the Pre-admission Letter will be sent to the universities who issued that Letter for placement confirmation.

 

College Preparatory Program:

According to the regulation of MOE, applicants coming for their undergraduate studies under the Chinese Government Scholarship Program are required to attend the college preparatory courses in the universities appointed by CSC for one year. College preparatory courses include the fundamentals of Chinese language, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Only by passing the examinations set for the foundation courses, can they start their undergraduate studies on time as specified in their Admission Notices.

 

CSC entrusts Beijing Language and Culture University, Tianjin University, Shandong University, Nanjing Normal University, Central China Normal University, Tongji University, Northeast Normal University and Beijing International Studies University to offer the college preparatory courses in 2016/2017 academic year. New students could be exempted from the college preparatory courses if they:

-Complete their secondary education in Chinese: an official letter from their school of secondary education certifying that Chinese language is the instruction language for the compulsory courses must be submitted.

- The students should reach the certain level required by the host university. A photocopy of the HSK Certificate must be attached to the application documents. The validity of the HSK test is two years.

 

Graduate and non-degree scholarship students can register for either the Chinese taught program of the English-taught program if applicable. Program Search (By visiting http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or http://www.campuschina.org) can help you find the program and university you're interested in.

Scholarship recipients of Chinese-taught programs without adequate Chinese proficiency must take Chinese language courses for one or two academic years to reach the language requirements of their host universities before moving on to their major studies. Failure to reach the required language proficiency will lead to the automatic termination of scholarship. Chinese language courses will be one year for majors in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, West Medicine, Economics, Management, Legal Studies and Fine Arts, and be no more than two years for majors in Literature, History, Philosophy and Chinese Medicine.

Scholarship recipients of the English-taught programs or those with adequate Chinese language proficiency do not need to take Chinese language courses.

 

Full scholarships cover:

(1). Tuition waiver: Tuition funds will be comprehensively used by th host university. It may cover scholarship students' education, administration costs and expenditures to support student activities.

(2). Accommodation: free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy. If the host university requires students to live on campus, the university will accommodate the scholarship students in a university dormitory (usually a twin room); if the host university permits students to live off campus, the university will provide monthly/quarterly accommodation subsidy.

-      Undergraduate students (preppies), master's students (general scholars): CNY 700 per month;

-      Doctoral students (senior scholars): CNY 1000 per month

(3). Monthly stipend is provided to students by the host institution at the following rates (Chinese Yuan per month, 1Yuan roughly equals 1.5 Pula):

-      Undergraduates & Chinese language students: CNY 2,500 Yuan

-      Master degree students & general scholars: CNY 3,000 Yuan

-      Doctoral degree students & senior scholars: CNY 3,500 Yuan

Scholarship students shall receive their monthly allowance after registration. New students who register before 15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount of that month. Students upon graduation will be given a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation time set by the university. If registered student stays out of China for more than 15 days due to a personal reason (school holidays excluded), his stipend will be stopped during his leaving.

Admission & Registration:

Scholarship winners will get the admission package from the Chinese Embassy by the end of July, 2016, and must register at the host university before the deadline which is usually September, 2016. If applicants fail to register before the deadline for registration, their scholarship will not be reserved.

 

 

2.      MOFCOM Scholarship Program

 

Introduction:

MOFCOM Scholarship is set up by Ministry of Commerce of People's Republic of China (MOFCOM) to further strengthen the communication and cooperation between China and other countries as well as to develop talents for developing countries. Starting from 2015, MOFCOM Scholarship mainly sponsors the young and the middle-aged talents from recipient countries to pursue their postgraduate degree education in China and entrusts China Scholarship Council to administer the Scholarship.

 

Supporting Categories, Duration of Scholarship and Instruction Language:

MOFCOM Scholarship supports Master's program for 2-3 years or PhD program for 3-4 years. Scholarship winners must register for English-taught program if such program is available. When only Chinese-taught program is available, students should take Chinese language training courses for one to two years before moving on to their degree study.

 

Eligibility:

-Applicants must be a citizen of Botswana, and be in good health;

-Applicants must be a bachelor's degree holder when applying for master's program;

-Applicants must be a master's degree holder when applying for doctoral program;

-Applicants must be under the age of 45 when applying;

-Applicants must have sufficient English or Chinese proficiency which meets the academic requirements of the program. English: IETS 6.0 or above, Chinese: HSK level 4 (score180) or above, or other evidence which indicates your English or Chinese proficiency is adequate.

-Applicants must be officials of division level and above or middle and senior management staff in government, university, research institute, NGO, media etc. Senior officials are preferred.

 

Application Package Documents:

Applicants must provide the following full package of application documents (marked MOFCOM Scholarship, 2 sets of hard copies) to the Chinese Embassy in Botswana before 15 April, 2016. Application materials will not be returned regardless of the result of application.

(1). Application Form for MOFCOM Scholarship;

Ensure you have both submitted it online and printed 2 hard copies via www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or www.campuschina.org

(2). Photocopy of highest diploma;

(3). Photocopy of academic transcripts;

(4). A Study Plan or Research Proposal with a minimum of 400 words;

(5). Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form;

(6). Photocopy of English or Chinese proficiency;

(7). Photocopy of a valid passport.

 

Placement:

Each applicant can choose one same major in three universities out of the 26 designated universities (the full list can be found on the Embassy's website http://bw.china-embassy.org/eng/) as their desired option. CSC will place each applicant in one university only based on their desired option and universities' requirements.

 

Scholarship Coverage:

-tuition waiver;

-on-campus accommodation;

-stipend:

3000RMB per month per master student,

3500RMB per month per PhD student;

-medical insurance

-one-time round-trip international air tickets

 

Admission & Registration:

Scholarship winners will get the admission package from ECCO of the Chinese Embassy by the end of August, 2016, and must register at the host university before the deadline which is usually September, 2016.

 

Instructions of the CSC Online Application System for MOFCOM Scholarship:

Step 1: Visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or www.campuschina.org and click "Application Online for International Students".

Step 2: Read "Tips for online application" carefully before clicking "NEXT" to the registration page.

Step 3: After registration, log in with your user name and password. Click "Application Forms" and choose "MOFCOM Scholarship".

Step 4: Put 00010 as your Agency Number.

Step 5: Please fill all the required information truly, correctly and completely following the navigation bars on the left of the page.

Applicants are required to s elect a discipline before choosing their majors. Please refer to the Disciplines Index, which could be downloaded from Help, if you have any doubt about the disciplines and majors.

Step 6: After completing the application form, please click "Preview" and check your Application Form carefully before submitting it. Click "Confirmation of Submit" in the upper right corner to submit your Application Form.

Step 7: Download the completed Application Form by clicking "Download Application" and print two hard copies.

Step 8: Prepare other supporting documents as required and send the full package of application documents (two sets of hard copies) to the Chinese Embassy.

Step 9: You can make changes to your application by clicking Retrieve Application on the left of the page. But you have to make sure to submit it again by clicking Confirmation of Submit after finishing all the changes. Otherwise, the retrieved application will become invalid and your new application will not be accepted either.

 

 

One applicant can only apply for one scholarship program. All application documents must be marked MOE Scholarship or MOFCOM Scholarship and addressed or hand delivered to:
