2020/05/07

On 7th May 2020, a handover ceremony for donations from China’s Shandong Province in support of Botswana’s COVID-19 prevention and control was held at the Chinese Embassy in Gaborone. H.E. Dr. Zhao Yanbo, Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, Hon. Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Health and Wellness and other Chinese and Botswana officials attended the ceremony.

Ambassador Zhao said that since the COVID-19 outbreak, China and Botswana have been firmly standing together and fighting the virus side by side. Including today’s donation, the Chinese government and enterprises have already donated four batches of medical supplies to Botswana. Since the city of Tai’an, Shandong Province established a sister-city relationship with Francistown, Botswana in 2008, friendship between the two sides has grown stronger. Concerned about the pandemic situation in Botswana, Shandong quickly prepared medical materials and delivered them to Botswana, which vividly demonstrated the profound friendship between the two peoples.

Ambassador Zhao emphasized that on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Botswana, it is of special significance for the two countries to work together to fight against the pandemic. As the first country to donate emergency medical supplies to Botswana, China focuses on the effectiveness of the assistance rather than paying lip service or playing with figures. We fully shared China’s experiences with Botswana on epidemic prevention and control, believing that our friendship is more precious than gold. The Chinese side sincerely hopes that these materials can help Botswana defeat the coronavirus and bring the local economic and social development back on track at an early date. China-Botswana relations will be further elevated to a new height once the two countries jointly overcome this pandemic challenge.

On behalf of the Botswana government and people, Hon. Minister Kwape expressed his heartfelt thanks for the assistance and support provided by Shandong Province. He said the slogan on the donated materials “When people are determined, they can overcome anything” well represents the spirit needed in the face of a pandemic. Hon. Minister Kwape also said that with the assistance from China and other parties, Botswana’s prevention and control work is going well and the number of recovered cases has been on the rise. The government is planning to lift the lockdown and resume business and production in a phased manner. He expressed full confidence in Botswana’s final victory in the fight against COVID-19.

Local media such as Daily News and BTV covered the event.
