On 21 January 2006, Ambassador Jiang Zhengyun attended and made a keynote speech at a celebration evening for the coming Chinese Spring Festival convened at the Gaborone International Conference Centre under the auspices of the Botswana Chinese General Chamber of Commerce.

Ambassador Jiang Zhengyun gave a positive assessment on the job the General Chamber had done to strengthen the solidarity of the Chinese community, to lead them in law observation, to make contribution to the charity cause and to promote the mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Botswana peoples. He wished that it could do more to unite and serve the Chinese community and facilitate their business and integration into the local society. Noting that the Chinese community had made important efforts for the progress of the local economy and society, the promotion of the Chinese culture and civilization as well as the friendly relations between China and Botswana, Ambassador Jiang hoped that they would respect the local law and culture, keep in good terms with the local people and achieve common development with them, as well as make new contribution to the prosperity and reunification of China. He stated that the Chinese Government would continuously push forward the great cause of reunification through the basic policy of "Peaceful reunification, one country two systems" and unswervingly oppose the "Taiwan independence" activities. Ambassador Jiang stressed that the Chinese Embassy in Botswana would do its best to provide the Chinese community with excellent consular service and welcome any suggestion on that regard.

Mr. Qiao Liang, Preident of the Botswana Chinese General Chamber of Commerce owed his gratitude to the Embassy for the support it had all along been rendering to the General Chamber. He noted that in the coming new year, the General Chamber would continue with efforts of safeguarding the legitimate interests of the Chinese community and promoting the well fare of the local society, adding that he hoped all the Chinese nationals doing business in Botswana would abide by the law, behave honestly and care for the local people. Qiao spoke highly of the great achievement China attained in all fields last year, expressed strong support for the economic development and great cause of the peaceful reunification of China.

Showcased at the evening were solo, choir, Beijing Opera, martial arts, local music and dance, and so on. More than 600 people from the local Chinese community, Chinese agencies, Embassy of China in Botswana as well as some local and other foreign friends participated in the event.
