Botswana to continue support of "one China Policy"-Motsumi

GABORONE: The new Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, Mr. Liu Huanxing has thanked Botswana for having supported his country during its internal dispute with the island of Taiwan which wants to break away from mainland China.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Minister of Health, Lesego Motsumi yesterday, Liu said that he hopes Botswana and China will intensify their cooperation in areas of health.

“China is more advanced in the areas of public health and manufacturing of medicines like in the recent case of Swine Flu where we found medicine to contain it,” he said. He added that if Botswana intends to build more hospitals, the Chinese are willing to help as they have expertise in engineering and construction.

Liu also said he had already met some Chinese doctors who are practicing in Botswana and they had assured him that they appreciated the hospitality they receive from Batswana.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Motsumi said she appreciates her ministry’s cooperation with China on areas of health reiterating that China does not only provide Botswana with doctors but also in other areas such as provision of dieticians.

Motsumi said she hopes that this cooperation will continue and explore to other new avenues.

On the issue of China’s dispute with Taiwan, Motsumi said Botswana supports the One China policy and does not want to dwell much on the dispute. She said that she hopes the two sides will find an amicable solution to the dispute.

Motsumi also welcomed the new initiative by the University of Botswana to start teaching Chinese soon as this will enable Batswana to communicate with their Chinese counterparts with ease.
