On 1st June 2020, the second batch of medical supplies donated by the Chinese government in support of Botswana's fight against COVID-19 all arrived in Gaborone. Due to limited air transportation capability, the supplies were delivered by two flights on 29th May and 1st June respectively. H.E. Dr. Zhao Yanbo, Chinese Ambassador to Botswana and Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Health and Wellness received the donation at the airport on 29th May.

In his remarks Ambassador Zhao said that China and Botswana enjoy profound friendship and brotherhood, supporting each other in the fight against COVID-19. The Chinese government and enterprises have provided multiple batches of medical supplies since China's successful control of the virus. Today's donation once again demonstrated the two countries’ brotherhood and unity in battling the pandemic. What China has provided is not only the material aid, but more importantly the solidarity and confidence to defeat the virus. As the virus is still rampant in the world including Africa, we can hardly claim a victory unless it is defeated in all countries. China will provide as much help as possible to Botswana until the final victory is won.

Minister Kwape appreciated the continued support to Botswana's health sector from China. He said that China has provided timely assistance of medical supplies among others to Botswana since the outbreak of COVID-19, which is a true symbol of the unity of the two countries in fighting the pandemic and has strengthened bilateral relations and friendship. The donation will go a long way in helping Botswana frontline workers such as doctors, nurses, border officers, drivers and journalists who work day-in and day-out to fight the pandemic. Botswana will continue to further the cooperation with China so as to defeat the virus and resume normal life at an early date.
