Chinese Ambassador gave the keynote address at the BIE annual dinner

The Botswana Institution of Engineers (BIE) welcomed its new Council for 2009/2010 at its annual dinner on 15 August. The colorful event was graced by a large number of practicing engineers and representatives from the Ministry of Works and Transport. The Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, H.E. Mr. Liu Huanxing also attended the event and gave the keynote address.

In his address, Ambassador Liu said that the Chinese engineers would like to exchange information on advanced technologies with counterparts of other countries. The Chinese Embassy would like to introduce the BIE to the relevant engineer institute of China. "I hope that in future the two countries can further establish some form of working relationship in the engineering field through their professional institutions," he said.

Speaking at the event, the outgoing President of BIE, Dr. Roy Ontiretse said his council has been working very closely with the Ministry of Works and Transport to amend the Engineers Registration Act 1998(ERB) which has been passed by the Parliament in December 2008.

The new President, Mr. Dithuso Phetlhu said the position came with a particular challenge in terms of the Parliament's concern about the workmanship and delivery of government projects.
