China Holds Video Consultation with the Special Envoys of the African Union (AU) on COVID-19

On September 9, 2020, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China held a video consultation with the African Union (AU) on implementing the outcomes of the Extraordinary China-Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19 held in June this year. Chinese Vice Minister of Finance Zou Jiayi, Head of Mission of China to African Union Liu Yuxi, Director-general of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Wu Peng, former Rwandan Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Donald Kaberuka, former Algerian Finance Minister Abderrahmane Raouia and other AU special envoys attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Responsible officials from China's Ministry of Commerce, the China International Development Cooperation Agency, the Export-Import Bank of China, and other relevant departments and financial institutions were present.

The Chinese side said, with the joint efforts of the Chinese side and the African side, important progress has been made in implementing the outcomes of the Extraordinary China-Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19. The Chinese side is willing to work with the African side to advance epidemic prevention and control, and economic and trade cooperation in a coordinated way to help Africa stabilize the economy and protect livelihoods. The Chinese side will actively promote cooperation with Africa in vaccines and work with the international community to enhance support for African countries in debt suspension and other areas.

The African side thanked China for its urgent assistance after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Africa and appreciated the positive progress in implementing the outcomes of the Extraordinary China-Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19. The African side believed that the concerted efforts of China and Africa has significantly contributed to Africa's economic recovery and epidemic prevention and control, and looked forward to strengthening cooperation with the Chinese side in areas such as vaccine development, debt relief and promoting industrialization in Africa.
