Wu Bangguo Meets with President of the National Assembly of Madagascar

On March 23, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met in the Great Hall of the People with visiting President Jean Rahiniriko of the National Assembly of Madagascar and his delegation.

Wu made positive remarks over China-Madagascar relations. He said China and Madagascar enjoy traditional friendship and bilateral relations based on the five principles of peaceful co-existence have been developing smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries 33 years ago. Currently the two countries enjoy frequent exchanges at all levels, sound cooperation in various fields and close coordination in international affairs. He stressed as two developing nations, both China and Madagascar are faced with such important tasks as developing the economy, improving people's livelihood and enhancing democracy and legislation. It serves the common interests of both countries and peoples to promote China-Madagascar friendly cooperative relations.

Wu indicated China would like to take the opportunity of President Rahiniriko's visit to China to uplift the exchanges and cooperation between China's NPC and Madagascar's National Assembly to a new level so as to facilitate the deepening of the friendship between the two peoples, the expansion of economic and trade cooperation and the promotion of the comprehensive development of bilateral relations.

Rahiniriko said the parliament of Madagascar would like to expand exchanges and cooperation with China's NPC in a bid to push forward the friendship between the two peoples and countries and promote the development of bilateral relations. He stressed it is a common international practice to oppose the splitting of a country and maintain national sovereignty and territorial integrity through legislation. The government, parliament and people of Madagascar firmly support the Anti-Secession Law formulated by China's NPC as well as the lofty cause of China's reunification.
